MQL Finals Night

This season’s MQL finale will be held at Unison in St Helens on Wednesday from 8 pm. The finals of the MQL Plate and the MIMIR Trophy will be held with the highlight the final of the MQL Challenge Cup between two Ormskirk teams, Colly Wobblers, the holders, and Unison. Spectators will be most welcome.

Feeny Cup and Rendon Cup

Congratulations to Unison who have won the MQL Feeny Cup. In a very tight group of three, they lost to Oxton Cons (Wirral) 45-48 despite 16 points from Darren Martin. In losing by fewer than four points they picked up a losing bonus point which was to prove crucial. Rainhill Victoria (Liverpool) had already beaten Oxton Cons 60-52, so Unison just needed to beat Rainhill in the final match which they did by 54-47. Charles Johnson scored 18 and Darren Martin another 16.

Abbey Saints lost the final of the MQL Rendon Cup 30-43 against Bookworms (Liverpool).

Presentation Night

Forty players representing thirteen teams attended at Aughton Institute and saw two closely contested matches.

In the Plate Final Division One winners Colly Wobblers were unable to overcome a 12 point handicap against Division Two winners Abbey Saints who triumphed 56-53. Barbara Flaherty scored 16 for the winners and Pat Gibson scored 22 for the losers.

In the Don Liptrot Trophy Final between Squigglers and Abbey Sinners the scores were level after eight rounds, Sinners starting one ahead on the handicap. In the extra round Sinners scored a full house to win 58-53. Bill Gerrard scored 18 (+2) for the winners with Janet Crompton scoring 14 (+3) for the losers.

Thanks to all who assisted in the running of the evening, especially Brian Ball who presented the trophies.

A raffle raised £78 for our charities Cancer Research and HCPT.

Highlights Don Liptrot Trophy Semi finals

Cup:- Squigglers managed to pull back a 19 point deficit on Aughton Institute, running out comfortable winners in the end, thanks largely to 20 points from Janet Crompton.  Despite 20 points from Darren Martin, Unison failed to make up a 10 point deficit on Abbey Sinners, for whom Steve Pilkington scored 15. Hence Monday’s Cup final will be between Squigglers (11) and Abbey Sinners (12).

Plate:- 20 points each from Pat Gibson and Mike Unsworth (who managed a full house) helped Colly Wobblers  overhaul a 12 point handicap on Ormskirk Tennis Club. Colly Wobblers (0) now play Abbey Saints (12) in the Plate final on Monday.

Feeny Cup and Rendon Cup

Three Ormskirk teams competed in the Feeny Cup. Holders Colly Wobblers won two of their three games, but lost to Rainhill Victoria (Liverpool). Unison and Greyhound were drawn in the same group with Wings (Southport & Formby). None of the matches had a larger victory margin than five points. Unison beat both opponents and qualified for the finals with Rainhill Victoria and Oxton Cons (Wirral).

Two Ormskirk teams competed in the Rendon Cup. Abbey Sinners won one and lost one match in which they answered more questions than the winners. Abbey Saints won their first two matches and then lost by one point to Bootle YMCA (Liverpool). They qualified for the final which will be against Bookworms (Liverpool).

The finals will be on Wednesday April 25th hosted by the Wirral League.
