Ormskirk Quiz League

A member of the Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The Ormskirk Quiz League celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020.

The 2025-2026 season began on Monday September 8 with all twelve teams playing each other in one division.

A Handicap League will also be based on these results.

Two divisions will be formed post Christmas.

The Don Liptrot Trophy, a handicap knockout, will run throughout the season.

A Pairs competition will be held as part of a Presentation Evening at the Stanley Arms on Monday March 30.

Most teams are on the lookout for new players and spectators are welcome at all matches.

Highlights Week 13

Division 1:- Newburgh Lions are top of the table after their win over Colly Wobblers; Gareth Flynn and Darren Martin both scored 17 and Jim Maloney 16 for the winners while Steve Feller (17) and Andy McGowan (13) scored well for the losers. In the Turks Head derby the Saints, thanks to 20 points from Charles Johnson and 14 from Kevin Walton, won the day over the Sinners, for whom Peter Duffy scored 14 and Dave Waddilove 13. 17 points from Peter Gateley and 16 from John Wilson saw Greyhound victorious over Delph Tavern, for whom Mike Preston scored 16 and Paul McAteer 13. The handicap results remained the same.

Division 2:- Rugby Hounds are top after their win over Scarecrows; Eric Lupton (21), Tony Robinson (14) and Colin MacDonald (13) scored well for the winners while Magnus Brass (13) and Barry Marshall did likewise for Scarecrows. 18 points from Martin Burke ensured Hayfield Gang’s win over Ormskirk Theatre Company for whom Gordon Richards scored 15. The results of these two games remained unchanged when handicaps were applied. Despite 17 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Helenians, for whom Bob Foster scored 16 and Alf Westwell 14; the result was reversed on handicap.

Highlights Week 12

Division 1:- Despite an excellent 23 points from John Wilson, Greyhound lost to Newburgh Lions for whom Gareth Flynn scored 18, Darren Martin 14 and John Purslow also 14. 19 points from Bill Gerrard and 12 from Tony Spark, earned Turks Head Sinners a win over Delph Tavern, for whom Sue Perks scored 16. The results of these games were unchanged on handicap. 21 points from Charles Johnson and 12 from Kevin Walton earned Turks Head Saints a draw with Colly Wobblers, for whom Mike Unsworth scored 16; The Saints won on handicap.

 

Division 2:- An outstanding 25 points from Rob Green earned Benchwarmers their first win of the season, when they ran out clear winners over Hayfield Gang; they also won on handicap. An impressive 23 points from Eric Lupton, saw Rugby Hounds victorious over Ormskirk Theatre Company for whom Gordon Richards scored 15 and Alan Thompson 12; the result was reversed when handicaps were applied.

 

Merseyside Challenge Cup

Colly Wobblers won their latest match 51-36 against Aardvaks (Wirral), Pat Gibson scoring 22. This victory moves them up to second place in the table with two matches remaining. They play unbeaten top of the table Ringers (Warrington) in the next match in February.

President’s Shield

Ormskirk lost against Liverpool 2b 41-48 with Eric Lupton scoring 16 and Peter Duffy 12. They then beat Warrington 43-28 thanks to Eric Lupton scoring 19 and Peter Duffy 14.

Handicap Cup Round 2

CUP:-  Ormskirk Theatre Company began with a 22 point start on Newburgh Lions and held on to win by 5; Gareth Flynn (16) and Darren Martin (15) top scored for Newburgh and Alan Thompson (14) and Gordon Richards (13) did likewise for the winners. Despite an impressive 21 points from Charles Johnson, Turks Head Saints were just unable to claw back Hayfield Gang’s 12 point start; Rob Jones scored 14 for Hayfield. Greyhound, for whom Ritchie Venner scored an excellent 21 points, were unable to overhaul Helenians’ 14 point start, losing by six; Mike Flaherty (16) top scored for Helenians.

As a result Ormskirk Theatre Company, Helenians and Hayfield Gang proceed to the semi-final on March 23rd.

 

PLATE:- Delph Tavern began with a 3 point start on Colly Wobblers but ran out easy winners by 13; Paul McAteer (15) and Tom Evans (14) scored well for the winners. Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 20 and David Hodgson 13, managed to overhaul Benchwarmers 24 point start, winning by three; Rob Green scored 13 for Benchwarmers. 16 points each from Janet Crompton and Barry Marshall helped Scarecrows to just hang on to their 8 point start on Turks Head Sinners for whom Bill Gerrard scored 16 and Peter Duffy 14.

As a result Delph Tavern, Rugby Hounds and Scarecrows proceed to the semi-final on March 23rd.
