Ormskirk Quiz League

A member of the Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The Ormskirk Quiz League celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020.

The 2025-2026 season began on Monday September 8 with all twelve teams playing each other in one division.

A Handicap League will also be based on these results.

Two divisions will be formed post Christmas.

The Don Liptrot Trophy, a handicap knockout, will run throughout the season.

A Pairs competition will be held as part of a Presentation Evening at the Stanley Arms on Monday March 30.

Most teams are on the lookout for new players and spectators are welcome at all matches.

President’s Trophy

Ormskirk lost their first match of the season 45-47 to Wirral, gaining a bonus point for a defeat by four points or fewer. Pat Gibson scored 24. In the earlier match Ormskirk beat Warrington 50-39. Pat Gibson scored 25. In both matches he answered 7 of his own questions.

Highlights Week 11

Colly Wobblers are champions of the pre-Christmas league after their victory over Benchwarmers, for whom Rob Green scored 12; Steve Feller (17), Roy Atherton (13) and Mike Unsworth (19) scored well for the winners. 20 points from Eric Lupton and 16 from Colin MacDonald earned Rugby Hounds a win over Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Alan Thompson scored 18. Despite 19 points from Rob Jones, Hayfield Gang lost to Scarecrows; Janet Crompton (17) and Barry Marshall (18) top scored for the winners. In the Turks Head derby the Sinners emerged victorious over the Saints, for whom Charles Johnson scored 18; Bill Gerrard (15), Peter Duffy (17) and Francis Williams (13) led the scoring for the Sinners. The results of these games were unchanged when handicaps were applied. Greyhound, for whom Ritchie Venner scored 17 and John Wilson 13, won the day over Helenians; Bob Foster (17) and Alf Westwell (13) led the scoring for Helenians. The handicap result was a draw. 18 points each from Jim Maloney and Darren Martin assured Newburgh Lions’ win over Delph Tavern, for whom Paul McAteer and Mike Preston both scored 13. The result was reversed on handicap. Scarecrows finish top of the pre-Christmas Handicap League even with a game yet to play.

Highlights Week 10

Colly Wobblers regained top spot after their victory over Ormskirk Theatre Company. 15 points from Paul McAteer was instrumental in Delph Tavern’s victory over Helenians, for whom Alf Westwell scored 15. Despite 13 points from Charles Johnson and 12 from Barbara Flaherty, Turks Head Saints lost to Greyhound, for whom John Wilson scored 16 and as a result Greyhound move into second place.  Darren Martin’s 19 points greatly helped Newburgh Lions overcome Scarecrows, for whom Barry Marshall scored 15. The results of these games were reversed when handicaps were applied. 15 points from Eric Lupton and 12 from Colin MacDonald earned Rugby Hounds a comfortable win over Turks Head Sinners, who drop to fourth place. Despite 17 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Hayfield Gang who won their first match of the season. The results of these two games remained the same on handicap. Only two points separate the top six teams so anyone of them could win the league especially Delph Tavern who have a game in hand.

 

Close Finishes

With two weeks of matches remaining, two points separate the top six teams in the Pre Christmas League table.

In the Pre Christmas Handicap League table one point separates the top four teams.

There is also one postponed match still to be played. 

Merseyside Challenge Cup

Colly Wobblers lost to Casablanca (S&F) 47-49 in the latest night of matches. They gained one bonus point for a defeat by four points or fewer. Guest player Charles Johnson top scored with 17.
