Ormskirk Quiz League

A member of the Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The Ormskirk Quiz League celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020.

The 2025-2026 season began on Monday September 8 with all twelve teams playing each other in one division.

A Handicap League will also be based on these results.

Two divisions will be formed post Christmas.

The Don Liptrot Trophy, a handicap knockout, will run throughout the season.

A Pairs competition will be held as part of a Presentation Evening at the Stanley Arms on Monday March 30.

Most teams are on the lookout for new players and spectators are welcome at all matches.

President’s Shield

Ormskirk won one and lost one of their matches on the second night. Warrington were beaten 49-31, all players in double figures led by Eric Lupton with 18. Liverpool 2a won a close match 49-45. Alan Thompson top scored with 14, well supported by Eric Lupton with 13.

Highlights Week 8

Colly Wobblers re-assumed top of the table spot after their win over Greyhound, thanks mainly to an impressive 23 points from Pat Gibson and 13 from Andy McGowan; Ritchie Venner (14) and Brian Farrimond top scored for Greyhound. Delph Tavern, for whom Sue Perks scored 17 and Paul McAteer 12, lost their first game of the season to Rugby Hounds; Colin MacDonald (14), Eric Lupton (14) and David Hodgson (17) scored well for the winners.  Despite 21 points and a full house from Darren Martin and 16 from John Purslow, Newburgh Lions lost by the narrowest of margins to Turks Head Saints, for whom Charles Johnson scored 18 and Kevin Walton 12. The results of these games remained the same after handicaps were applied.     Despite a very impressive 23 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Carol Thompson scored 12; the Theatre Company picked up their first win of the season. 16 points each from Bill Gerrard and Francis Williams and 15 from Arthur Heyes earned Turks Head Sinners a victory over Hayfield Gang, for whom Martin Burke scored 15 and Rob Jones 12.  The results of these games were reversed on handicap. Scarecrows drew with Helenians but lost on handicap; Janet Crompton scored 17 for Scarecrows and Mike Flaherty 14 for Helenians.

Highlights Week 7

Delph Tavern have assumed top spot after their victory over Colly Wobbllers; Sue Perks (16) and Tom Evans (13) scored well for the winners, while Steve Feller (13) and Mike Unsworth (16) did likewise for the losers.   17 points each from Janet Crompton and Barry Marshall earned Scarecrows a win over Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Alan Thompson scored 14 and Gordon Richards 13.  The returning John Wilson and Ritchie Venner both scoring 14, helped Greyhound overcome Hayfield Gang, 15 points from Charles Johnson and 13 from Barbara Flaherty helped Turks Head Saints overcome Helenians. The results of these matches remained unchanged on handicap.   18 points from Darren Martin and 14 from Jim Maloney helped Newburgh Lions to a win over Rugby Hounds, for whom David Hodgson scored 15. Despite 12 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Turks Head Sinners, for whom Francis Williams scored 15. The results of these matches were reversed on handicap

President's Trophy

Ormskirk won both matches in defence of their title, beating Wirral 52-42, then Southport & Formby 55-36. In the first match John Wilson scored 18 including a full house of all his own questions. In the second match all players scored double figures led by Pat Gibson who scored 19.

Handicap Cup Round 1

Benchwarmers began with a 10 point start on Ormskirk Theatre Company which was overcome at the end of round 8 and hence led to a 9th round which Ormskirk Theatre Company won; Gordon Richards (15) and Alan Thompson (14) scored well for the eventual winners while Rob Green (13) did likewise for Benchwarmers. Newburgh Lions overcame Rugby Hounds 8 point start, winning by 2; Darren Martin’s impressive 25 points played a significant part in their victory and Eric Lupton scored 15 for Rugby Hounds. Delph Tavern were unable to pull back Hayfield Gang’s 13 point start, in the end losing by 17; Rob Jones (18) top scored for the winners and Paul McAteer scored 15 for the Delph. Greyhound gave Turks Head Sinners a 4 point start and caught them after round 8, they went on to win in round 9 despite Peter Duffy scoring 14 for the Sinners. Turks Head Saints had a 4 point start on Colly Wobblers but ran out clear winners by 17 points thanks mainly to an excellent 24 points from Charles Johnson. Helenians began with a 2 point start on Scarecrows and extended it to a 10 point win; Bob Foster (14) topped the scoring for the winners while Barry Marshall added 17 to Scarecrow’s score.
