Ormskirk Quiz League

A member of the Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The Ormskirk Quiz League celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020.

The 2024-2025 season will begin on Monday September 9 with all twelve teams playing each other in one division.

A Handicap League will also be based on these results.

Two divisions will be formed post Christmas.

The Don Liptrot Trophy, a handicap knockout, will run throughout the season.

A Pairs competition will be held in April as part of a Presentation Evening.

Ormskirk won both matches in the second night. Warrington were beaten 57-46 then Wirral 52-47. Details to follow.

Highlights Week 7

The top of the table clash between Colly Wobblers and Greyhound ended in a draw with John Wilson (20) scoring very well for Greyhound and Roy Atherton (12) and Andy McGowan (12) doing likewise for the home team; Colly Wobblers won on handicap. 18 points from Peter Duffy and 16 from Lee Whitehead ensured Turks Head Sinners’ win over Hayfield Gang; the Sinners also won on handicap. With all their players scoring in double figures led by Paul McAteer (14) and Sue Perks (13), Delph Tavern had a comfortable win over Benchwarmers; the Delph also won on handicap. Newburgh Lions climb to second in the table after their victory over Ormskirk Theatre Company; Darren Martin(18), Jim Maloney (17) and John Purslow (13) scored well for the winners. Newburgh also won on handicap. Despite 17 points from Charles Johnson and 12 from Barbara Flaherty, Turks Head Saints lost to Rugby Hounds, for whom Colin MacDonald, Eric Lupton and David Hodgson each scored 13. An impressive 22 points from Janet Crompton and16 from Barry Marshall saw Scarecrows to victory over Helenians; Scarecrows also won on handicap.

Handicap Knockout Round 1

Colly Wobblers, thanks to 19 points each from Andy McGowan and Mike Unsworth, managed to claw back Benchwarmers’ 25 point advantage to win by 5. Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Alan Thompson scored 15 and Gordon Richards 12, began with 17 point start on Delph Tavern but lost by a single point; Sue Perks and Paul McAteer both scored 15 for the winners.  Rugby Hounds overcame Scarecrows’ 10 point advantage to win by 7; David Hodgson (19) and Eric Lupton (16) scored well for the winners, while Janet Crompton added 14 points to Scarecrows’ score. Newburgh Lions began with a single point advantage on Turks Head Sinners but ran out comfortable winners by 19 points; top scorers for Newburgh were Jim Maloney (19), Darren Martin (15) and Gareth Flynn (12) while Lee Whitehead (14) scored well for the Sinners. Despite an impressive 21 points from Charles Johnson, Turks Head Saints were unable to catch Helenians, who had a 20 point start on them; Mike Flaherty scored 17 for the winners.  An outstanding 23 points from Rob Jones ensured Hayfield Gang’s victory over Greyhound, for whom John Wilson scored 18 and Ritchie Venner 16; Hayfield had a 26 point start and eventually won by 27.

Highlights Week 6

Colly Wobblers lead the table with a 100% record after their win over Ormskirk Theatre Company in which Pat Gibson in his first match of the season scored 21 including a full house, supported by 15 from Andy McGowan. Lynne Hawkes scored 13 for the Theatre Company. This was the only match where the addition of the handicaps produced a different winner. Greyhound remain in second despite losing to Turks Head Sinners for whom MQL Pairs champion Lee Whitehead scored 17 and Peter Duffy 15. Peter Gateley scored 17 and Ritchie Venner 14 for Greyhound. The closest result saw Scarecrows beat Rugby Hounds by one point despite 19 from Eric Lupton. Janet Crompton scored 14 for Scarecrows. 17 from Darren Martin and 16 from Jim Maloney led Newburgh Lions to victory over Delph Tavern for whom Paul McAteer scored 14 and Sue Perks 12. Helenians are now unbeaten in their last four matches, beating Hayfield Gang with all their players in double figures led by Bob Foster with 14 and Dave Boyd with 12, Rob Jones scored 15 and Martin Burke 12 for Hayfield Gang. Barbara Flaherty scored 19 and Kevin Walton 13 for Turks Head Saints in their victory over Benchwarmers.

Ormskirk Theatre Company retain their 100% record in the Handicap League table. Helenians move into second place followed by Turks Head Saints in third.
