The first matches in the Bootle League were played in October 1959. They were joined in 1960 by the Liverpool League. Over the next few seasons expansion took place throughout Merseyside, although leagues continued to be organised on a geographical basis. Promotion and relegation within leagues appeared in the 1970s.
From the beginning competitions were organised for individual teams to play against those from other leagues, followed by representative teams in 1965 and individual players ten years later.
Radio Merseyside broadcast a competition from 1970 called 'Heads You Win', then 'Merseyquiz'.
Ormskirk teams entered the available competitions from the first season in1970 and have enjoyed much success.
