Handicap Knockout Round 2

CUP:- Delph Tavern had a four point start over Newburgh Lions and ended up winning by six; Paul McAteer scored an excellent 18 points for the winners while Darren Martin added 14 to Newburgh’s score.   Helenians, for whom Mike Flaherty scored 17, began with a 25 point start on Colly Wobblers and held on, winning by 8; Andy McGowan (15) and Mike Unsworth (13) top scored for Colly Wobblers.   Rugby Hounds gave Hayfield Gang a 17 point start but failed to catch them, finally losing by 6 points; Rob Jones scored 12 for the winners as did Colin MacDonald, Eric Lupton and David Hodgson for Rugby Hounds. 

As a result Delph Tavern, Helenians and Hayfield Gang qualify for the semi finals in March

 

PLATE:- Ormskirk Theatre Company held on to their 22 point advantage over Turks Head Sinners, running out winners by 14; Steve Pilkington scored 12 for the Sinners.    A remarkable 23 points from Charles Johnson and 14 from Kevin Walton greatly helped Turks Head Saints overcome a 20 point deficit to win by 8 over Benchwarmers, for whom Rob Green scored a creditable 17 points. Scarecrows began their game against Greyhound with a 19 point start and won by 18, thanks to an outstanding 22 points from Barry Marshall; John Wilson scored 19 and Ritchie Venner 14 for Greyhound

So the Plate semi finals in March will be contested by Ormskirk Theatre Company, Turks Head Saints and Scarecrows

President’s Trophy

Ormskirk lost their first match of the season, going down to Southport & Formby, 44-47, but gained a bonus point for a close defeat. Pat Gibson top scored with 16. Liverpool were beaten in the second match 54-47 with Pat Gibson and Charles Johnson each scoring 17.

Highlights Week 11

Newburgh Lions finish top, so congratulations to them, after beating Colly Wobblers, for whom Andy McGowan and Mike Unsworth both scored 13; Darren Martin (17) and Jim Maloney (12) scored well for the winners.  Helenians, for whom Bob Foster scored 17, again won by a single point for the second week running, this time overcoming Delph Tavern, for whom Paul McAteer scored 13. 14 points from Gordon Richards enabled Ormskirk Theatre Company’s victory over Turks Head Saints.  In these three games, the result remained the same after handicap.

Greyhound finish in second place after their win over Scarecrows; Ritchie Venner scored 17 for the winners and Barry Marshall scored 14 for the losing team. 19 points from David Hodgson assured Rugby Hounds’ victory over Hayfield Gang, for whom Matt Cochrane scored 15. Turks Head Sinners had a comfortable win over Benchwarmers; Bill Gerrard (17), Lee Whitehead (15) and Peter Duffy (12) led the scoring for the winners, while Rob Green scored 14 for Benchwarmers.        In these last three games the result was reversed when handicaps were applied. 

Highlights Week 10

Newburgh Lions assume top place in the table after their win over Turks Head Sinners; Darren Martin (16) and John Purslow (12) scored well for the winners while Bill Gerrard (15) and Francis Williams (12) did likewise for the Sinners. Despite an impressive 20 points from Charles Johnson, Turks Head Saints lost to Delph Tavern, for whom Paul McAteer scored 17 and Sue Perks 14.  Hayfield Gang recorded a much needed win over Benchwarmers; Matt Cochrane scored 14 for the winners and Rob Green scored 13 and Andy Milne 12 for Benchwarmers. Despite 18 points from Gordon Richards, Ormskirk Theatre Company lost to Scarecrows for whom Janet Crompton scored 15. Helenians, thanks to 16 from Mike Flaherty, narrowly beat Colly Wobblers, for whom Roy Atherton scored 12.  In all the above matches the handicap result was unchanged. 17 points from Brian Farrimond and 16 from John Wilson earned Greyhound a win over Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 17; after handicaps were applied the result was reversed.

Next week sees the top two meeting to decide the title. Three teams are in contention at the top of the Handicap League table.

Highlights Week 9

Colly Wobblers lost their first match of the season to Turks Head Sinners, for whom Peter Duffy scored16 and Bill Gerrard 12; Andy McGowan (15) and Roy Atherton (14) scored well for the losers. The handicap result remained the same. Newburgh Lions remain in second place after their victory over Hayfield Gang; Gareth Flynn (15), Jim Maloney (14) and Darren Martin (13) top scored for the winners while Matt Cochrane (15) did likewise for Hayfield. John Wilson (16), Ritchie Venner (14) and Brian Farrimond (12) helped Greyhound to a comfortable win over Benchwarmers for whom Rob Green scored 13. 16 points from Eric Lupton helped Rugby Hounds overcome Ormskirk Theatre Company. Despite 15 points from Janet Crompton and 12 from Barry Marshall, Scarecrows lost narrowly to the Delph Tavern, for whom Paul McAteer scored 14. An impressive 21 points from Charles Johnson earned Turks Head Saints a victory over Helenians. In these five matches the handicap result was reversed.

With two weeks left before the league splits into two divisions, the competition for the top six places is extremely tight with ten teams having a possibility of finishing there, and will probably be decided on points difference.
