Ormskirk Quiz League

A member of the Merseyside Quiz Leagues

The Ormskirk Quiz League celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020.

The 2024-2025 season began on Monday September 9 with all twelve teams playing each other in one division.

A Handicap League will also be based on these results.

Two divisions will be formed post Christmas.

The Don Liptrot Trophy, a handicap knockout, will run throughout the season.

A Pairs competition will be held in April as part of a Presentation Evening.

Highlights Week 15

Division 1 :- Newburgh Lions remain unbeaten and top of the table after their win over Turks Head Sinners; Darren Martin (13) and John Purslow (13) top scored for the winners while Peter Duffy (14) and Arthur Heyes (12) did likewise for the Sinners. 15 points from Sue Perks and 12 each from Paul McAteer and Mike Preston earned Delph Tavern a victory over Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 14; as a result Delph Tavern assume second place in the table. Greyhound, thanks to 15 from John Wilson and 14 from Peter Gateley, beat a three man Colly Wobblers, for whom Mike Unsworth scored 16 and Andy McGowan 12. All three results remained the same after handicaps were applied. 

Division 2:- Scarecrows remain unbeaten and top of the table after their win over Ormskirk Theatre Company; Magnus Brass (14) and Janet Crompton (16) top scored for the winners. Hayfield Gang earned their first win after beating Benchwarmers, thanks to 13 points from Rob Jones. Turks Head Saints, thanks to 13 from Charles Johnson, beat Helenians. The results of these matches remained the same when handicaps were applied. 

Mimir Competition 2025

The Ormskirk MIMIR heats will be held at The Greyhound, Ormskirk at 8pm sharp on  Monday 17th February. Anyone wishing to enter should contact myself by email  or phone . The entry will be restricted to 16 players, so if you wish to enter please contact me. The entry window will run from Tuesday 28th January until Sunday 9th February. I will then do the draw and publish it on the Ormskirk Quiz League website. The top six players will then be eligible to enter the Merseyside competition which will be played on Wednesday 19th March at New Brighton Cricket Club (8pm start). 

Presidents Trophy

Ormskirk have won the Presidents trophy having won 7 out of 8 games.  They beat Warrington 50-45 in a close game with Pat Gibson scoring 19 and John Wilson 13. In the second game they overcame Liverpool 58-37 with all players scoring in double figures led by Charles Johnson (17) and Pat scoring 15.

Highlights Week 14

Division 1 :- Newburgh Lions go clear at the top of the table after their win over Greyhound; Jim Maloney (15) and Darren Martin (19) top scored for the winners while Brian Farrimond added 14 to Greyhound’s score. 15 points from Paul McAteer and 12 from Sue Perks assured Delph Tavern’s win over Colly Wobblers, for whom Andy McGowan scored 14 and Steve Feller 13. A very impressive 24 points from Eric Lupton helped Rugby Hounds secure their first win over Turks Head Sinners, who remain winless; Bill Gerrard (18) and Peter Duffy (17) top scored for the Sinners. All these matches remained the same after Handicaps were applied.

Division 2:- Scarecrows remain top after beating Helenians; Magnus Brass (16) and Janet Crompton (14) led the scoring for the winners while Alf Westwell scored 14, and Bob Foster 13 for Helenians. Despite 16 points from Mike Wall,  Benchwarmers lost to Ormskirk Theatre Company with Alan Thompson scoring 14 for the winners.    The results of these two games were reversed when handicaps were applied   15 points from Kevin Walton and 16 from Charles Johnson saw Turks Head Saints victorious over Hayfield Gang for whom Martin Burke scored 13. The Saints also won on handicap.

Highlights Week 13

Division 1 :- Despite18 points from Paul McAteer, Delph Tavern lost to Newburgh Lions who are now in joint top place in the table; Darren Martin (22) top scored for the winners. The result was reversed when handicaps were applied.   Colly Wobblers, for whom Mike Unsworth scored 17, join Newburgh in top place after their win over Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 15. Greyhound, thanks to 18 from Ritchie Venner, had a comfortable win over Turks Head Sinners. The results of these latter two matches remained the same on handicap. 

Division 2:- Scarecrows remain top of the table after their win over Benchwarmers; Janet Crompton (17), Magnus Brass (14) and Barry Marshall (13) scored well for the winners. The handicap result remained the same. Despite 17 points from Alan Thompson and 12 from Gordon Richards, Ormskirk Theatre Company lost narrowly to Turks Head Saints, for whom Charles Johnson scored 15. The Theatre Company won however on handicap.
