Highlights Week 18

Division 1 :- Congratulations to Unison who retained the Division 1 title with a 100% record (a feat last achieved ten years ago by Old Dog). They won their final game against Greyhound thanks to 15 points from Darren Martin; Mal Collier also scored 15 for Greyhound.   Colly Wobblers finish second after their win over Rugby Hounds for whom David Hodgson scored16; Pat Gibson registered an impressive 21 points for the winners.  18 points from Sue Perks helped Robin Hood to a victory over Helenians, who only fielded two players. Despite 16 points each from Colin Shaw and Dave Sinclair, a three man Newburgh Lions lost to Turks Head Sinners who finish a creditable fourth after their promotion to the first division; Bill Gerrard scored 20 for the winning team. 19 points from Kevin Walton saw Turks Head Saints home against Ormskirk Tennis Club, for whom Paul Prior scored 15.

Division 2 :- Congratulations to Whippet who have won the Division 2 title only dropping one point along the way, though they still have one match to play. They defeated Ormskirk Farmers, for whom Dave Berrington scored 14; also scoring 14 were Gordon Richards and Peter Duffy for the winning team. An impressive 23 points and full house from Janet Crompton and 14 from Eric Ray saw Squigglers home against Bispham Farmers Arms with Jim Dawber scoring 13 for the losers. 15 points each from Matt Cochrane and Andrew Sackville assured Gang of Four’s win over Ormskirk Theatre Company who only fielded three players, one of whom, Alan Thompson, scored 14. In a low scoring game, Benchwarmers beat Aughton Institute.

Charlie McAuley

Charlie passed away last weekend after a long illness. He was born in 1946 and attended the same London secondary school as Tony Grieco. He moved north with his work for the Home Office until 1994. He first played quiz for a team at the Royal Oak in the mid eighties, playing briefly for Ropers Arms and West Lancs Social Democrats before joining Whippet for whom he played until last season. A true character. 

The funeral will be at St Anne’s Church in Ormskirk on Friday February 28 at 12 30 pm followed by a cremation at 2 pm.

Merseyside Challenge Cup

Two Ormskirk teams have qualified for the semi finals. Colly Wobblers beat Turks Head Sinners 55-44 thanks to 17 from Pat Gibson and 15 from Mike Unsworth with Bill Gerrard scoring 19 for Sinners. Greyhound beat Yarboroughs (Warrington) 47-42 led by John Wilson with 15. Unison lost to Cricketers (Liverpool) 49-52 despite 16 from Darren Martin.

The semifinals on March 11 are Wings (S&F) v Colly Wobblers and Cricketers v Greyhound.

Highlights Week 17

Division 1 :- 20 points from Darren Martin and 16 from Charles Johnson aided Unison’s comfortable win over Turks Head Saints; their victory means 17 wins out of 17 and assures them the Division1 title with one game left, so congratulations to them. Greyhound, with18 from John Wilson, ran out eventual winners over Turks Head Sinners.   An impressive 24 points from Dave Sinclair earned Newburgh Lions, who only fielded three players, a win over Robin Hood. Helenians lost to Rugby Hounds with David Hodgson scoring 17 for the winners. 19 points and a full house from Andy McGowan plus 19 points from Pat Gibson helped Colly Wobblers to a win over Ormskirk Tennis Club, for whom Paul Prior scored 18.

Division 2 :- Whippet dropped their first point of the season when they drew with Gang of Four, though the one point  ensured they were champions of Division 2, so congratulations to them; Debbie Davidson (19) and Gordon Richards (14) top scored for Whippet while Rob Jones (18) and Andrew Sackville (16) did likewise for Gang of Four.   16 points from Janet Crompton earned Squigglers a comfortable victory over Legion Lions.  Despite 16 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Ormskirk Theatre Company for whom Alan Thompson scored 13. Aughton Institute, thanks to 16 from John Hesketh and 14 from Ian Bakewell beat Bispham Farmers Arms for whom Jim Dawber scored 14.

The inaugural Ormskirk Pairs will be held at the Upmarket Theatre on Church Street on Monday March 2.
