Highlights Week 9

The top two teams in Division 1 both had convincing victories. Unison scored 60 against Rugby Hounds with all four players in double figures - Alan Gibbs 17, Charles Johnson 16 and Darren Martin 15 leading the way - Eric Lupton scored 15 for the losers. John Wilson with 19 top scored for Greyhound against Newburgh Lions. Turks Head Sinners beat their pub mates by a single point with Bill Gerrard scoring 18. Whippet were ahead throughout at home against Robin Hood, Debbie Davidson contributing 15 for the winners, Sue Perks 16 and Tom Evans 15 were the leaders for the visitors.  

In Division 2 Squigglers now head the table on their own and retain their 100% record at the half way point in the season. They beat third placed Ormskirk Tennis Club thanks to 20 from Janet Compton, supported by Barry Marshall with 12 - Paul Prior scored 17 for their opposition. The Thompson family starred for Ormskirk Theatre Company in their win over Benchwarmers, Carole scoring 13 and Alan 12. Andrew Sackville scored 12 for Hayfield in their win against Bispham Farmers Arms.

Well done to every team in fulfilling all their fixtures in often difficult circumstances.

Highlights Week 8

Division 1:- Unison had a comfortable win over Colly Wobblers and remain top; Darren Martin scored 18 for the winners and Mike Unsworth scored 16 for the losers. Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 20, had a thumping win over Newburgh Lions.  Despite 19 points from Barbara Flaherty, Turks Head Saints lost to Whippet, for whom Gordon Richards scored 17 and Peter Duffy 15. In the other game Greyhound drew with Turks Head Sinners, with Ritchie Venner scoring 19 for the home team and Bill Gerrard  23 for the visitors.

Division 2:- In the top of the table clash Squigglers emerged victorious over Helenians; Janet Crompton scoring 18 for the winners and Mike Flaherty 18 for the losers. Despite 17 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Ormskirk Tennis Club, for whom Dave Gordon contributed 13 points. In a low scoring game Ormskirk Theatre Company beat Aughton Institute by the narrowest of margins. 

President's Trophy

Ormskirk won one and lost one on the first evening of matches. In the first match Liverpool were beaten 51-36 with John Wilson scoring 19 and Pat Gibson 16. In the second match Southport & Formby won 50-48 with the very rare event of all eight players achieving double figure scores.

Highlights Week 7

Division 1:- Unison remain top on points difference after their comfortable win over Robin Hood; top scorers were Alan Gibbs (21) and Darren Martin (18) for the winners. Colly Wobblers, all of whose players registered double figure scores, led by Mike Unsworth (17) also had a comfortable win this time over Newburgh Lions.   Likewise Greyhound with all their players in double figures of whom John Wilson top scored with 18 points, easily overcame Rugby Hounds.  Whippet pulled off a remarkable recovery, winning the last round 7-0 to achieve a draw with Turks Head Sinners; Gordon Richards top scored with 16 points for Whippet. In the postponed game Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 20 points beat the still winless Turks Head Saints; Barbara Flaherty scoring 15 for the Saints.

Division 2:- Helenians remain top and unbeaten after their win over Ormskirk Tennis Club who suffered their first defeat; Dave Boyd top scored for the winners with 20 points, while Keith Mountain scored 14 for the Tennis Club.   Benchwarmers registered their first win by beating Aughton Institute thanks to an impressive 22 points from Mike Wall.  Squigglers, thanks to 15 points from Janet Crompton, overcame Bispham Farmers Arms. Ormskirk Theatre Company beat Hayfield by the narrowest of margins thanks to 20 points from Alan Thompson.

MQL Buzzer Quiz

The Ormskirk team of Alan Gibbs, Pat Gibson, Alan Thompson and Madeline Evans fell just short of retaining the title, losing in the semi-final to the eventual winners Teesside. Pat Gibson retained the award for Best Individual Performance. Full results are here.
