Highlights Week 6

Newburgh Lions, thanks to 20 points from Darren Martin, maintained their 100% record with a narrow win over Delph Tavern, for whom Mike Preston scored 14. Newburgh also won on handicap and top the handicap table as well.    Turks Head Sinners recorded their first win of the season by comfortably beating Ormskirk Theatre Company; Bill Gerrard (17) and Peter Duffy (15) top scored for the Sinners who also won on handicap.   20 points from Barry Marshall and 16 from Janet Crompton ensured Scarecrows’ win over Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 12.   Turks Head Saints drew for second time, this time with Colly Wobblers; Charles Johnson scored 15 for the home team and Mike Unsworth 21 for Colly Wobblers. The Saints won comfortably on handicap.   Greyhound beat Helenians on both scores on the night and handicap with all four players scoring well, namely John Wilson (16), Brian Farrimond (13), Mal Collier (15) and Ritchie Venner (14).

Merseyside Challenge Cup

In the first evening of matches Colly Wobblers beat Aigburth People (Liverpool) 53-35, Pat Gibson achieving a full house in his score of 23 points. Greyhound beat E Street Band (S&F) 41-19 in a three-a-side contest with 19 from John Wilson and a welcome appearance from Peter Gateley.

Highlights Week 5

Newburgh Lions remain top after their win over Scarecrows, thanks largely to a remarkable 27 points from Darren Martin, while Janet Crompton (20) and Barry Marshall (14) scored well for Scarecrows; Newburgh also won on handicap.   Turks Head Saints and Delph Tavern fought out a high scoring draw with Turks Head Saints winning on handicap. Tom Evans (15),  Mike Preston (13) and Paul McAteer (12) top scored for the Delph, while Charles Johnson (17), Kevin Walton (14) and Mike Critchley (12) did likewise for the Saints.   Despite an excellent 19 points from Alan Thompson, Ormskirk Theatre Company lost to Rugby Hounds, for whom Colin MacDonald scored 16 and David Hodgson 13; however the Theatre Company won on handicap. 18 points from Mike Unsworth and 14 from Andy McGowan earned Colly Wobblers a comfortable victory over Helenians; Colly Wobblers also won on handicap.  Greyhound made it four wins out of four after their win over Hayfield Gang, for whom Matt Cochrane score 14. Greyhound’s leading scorers were Ritchie Venner (19), John Wilson (14) and Mal Collier (13), though Hayfield won on handicap scores.

Highlights Week 4

With Greyhound not playing, Newburgh Lions assume top spot after their win over Ormskirk Theatre Company, making it four wins out of four. Gareth Flynn and Darren Martin both scored 15 points each for the winners, while Gordon Richards scored an excellent 18 points for the losers.   In a much closer game, Colly Wobblers, for whom Andy McGowan scored 13 and Mike Unsworth 14, pulled away in the final round to beat Hayfield Gang; Hayfield Gang won comfortably on handicap though.   Despite 16 points from Bill Gerrard, Turks Head Saints lost to Rugby Hounds; Eric Lupton (14), David Hodgson (13) and Colin MacDonald (12) scored well for Rugby Hounds who also won on handicap.  In easily the highest aggregate score of the week, Helenians, for whom All Westwell and Bob Foster both scored 14, defeated Delph Tavern; Paul McAteer scoring an excellent 20 points for the losers. Helenians also won comfortably on handicap.   Despite an impressive 22 points from Barry Marshall, Scarecrows lost to Turks Head Saints, for whom Kevin Walton contributed 13 points; the Saints also won on handicap.

Highlights Week 3

An impressive 22 points from Darren Martin and 15 from Jim Maloney enabled Newburgh Lions’ narrow win over Rugby Hounds, for whom Eric Lupton scored 17 and David Hodgson 14; Newburgh Lions also won on handicap.   An equally impressive 21 points from Charles Johnson ensured Turks Head Saints’ win over Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Alan Thompson scored 16 and Gordon Richards 12; however the Theatre Company won on handicap.   The Delph Tavern, all of whose players scored in double figures with Paul McAteer (14), Mike Preston (13) and Tom Evans (12) leading, overcame Hayfield Gang comfortably.   Scarecrows, thanks to 17 from Janet Crompton and 13 from Magnus Brass, beat Helenians. Greyhound remain top on points difference from Newburgh Lions, after their win over Turks Head Sinners, thanks to an exceptional 22 points from John Wilson; Mal Collier (14) and Ritchie Venner (12) also scored well for the winners. The Sinners won on handicap however with Peter Duffy (18) and Bill Gerrard (17) scoring well for them.
