An Ormskirk team comprising Madeline Evans and Alan Gibbs (both Unison), Pat Gibson (Colly Wobblers) and Alan Thompson (Ormskirk Theatre Company) took part in the second MQL Buzzer Quiz in Liverpool on Saturday. The 20 teams from all over the country were divided into four pools of 5 for the morning matches. Ormskirk, together with two other teams, won 3 of their 4 matches and qualified as pool winner, in 4th place overall. The afternoon results were almost identical so Ormskirk qualified for the semi finals where Bolton were defeated 450 to 320. The final against Lancaster was much closer with Ormskirk winning the Cup 470 to 435.
Pat Gibson won the Best Individual Trophy, based on average individual scores, per starter question faced.

Three of the four Ormskirk teams won their first match of the season. In Group 1 Wings (S&F) were much too strong for Turks Head Sinners, winning 48-29. In Group 2 Unison won comfortably against Aigburth People (Liverpool) 47-27, Darren Martin with 18 and Charles Johnson with 16 leading the way. In Group 3 Greyhound scraped through against Soapsuds (Wirral) 35-34 despite playing one short. In Group 4 Colly Wobblers won comfortably against Bookworms (Liverpool) 53-28, Pat Gibson scoring 23 and Mike Unsworth 16.

Division 1 :- Unison remain top after a comfortable win over Turks Head Sinners; Darren Martin (17) and Charles Johnson (15) led the scoring for Unison. Turks Head Saints, thanks to 15 from Kevin Walton, registered their first win, with a victory over Helenians, for whom Alf Westwell also scored 15. 20 points from Jim Maloney helped Newburgh Lions overcome Rugby Hounds. Robin Hood got their season up and running with their first win over Ormskirk Tennis Club; Sue Perks (19) and Tom Evans (15) top scored for Robin Hood while Paul Prior replied with 19 for the Tennis Club. An impressive 24 points from Pat Gibson was the difference in Colly Wobblers win over Greyhound.
Division 2 :- 18 points from John Hesketh greatly helped Aughton Institute’s cause in their narrow victory over Legion Lions, for whom Steve Garrett scored 13. 17 points from Janet Crompton and 14 from Barry Marshall ensured Squigglers’ victory against Ormskirk Theatre Company. In a low scoring game, Rob Jones’ 15 points was the stand out performance enabling Gang of Four’s win over Bispham Farmers Arms.

Ormskirk won their first two matches in defence of the President’s Trophy, beating Warrington 51-26 and Wirral 54-41. In the first match Pat Gibson scored 21 points. In the second match Pat scored 18 and John Wilson 17.

Division 1 :- 16 points from Darren Martin helped Unison overcome Robin Hood. Turks Head Sinners, thanks to 17 from Bill Gerrard beat a three man Helenians, for whom Dave Boyd scored 16. Despite 17 points from Kevin Walton, Turks Head Saints lost to Colly Wobblers with Pat Gibson scoring 19 for the winners. 20 points and a ‘full house’ from Jim Maloney helped Newburgh Lions to a narrow win over Ormskirk Tennis Club. John Wilson’s 19 points aided Greyhound’s win over Rugby Hounds.
Division 2 :- Ormskirk Theatre Company made it two wins out of two by beating Legion Lions; Alan Thompson with 15, top scored for the Theatre Company while 18 points from Steve Garrett did likewise for Legion Lions. Whippet also remain unbeaten after their win over Squigglers; Debbie Davidson scored 16 for the winners. Despite 18 from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost narrowly to Gang of Four for whom Matt Cochrane scored 15. Ormskirk Farmers overcame Aughton Institute with Dave Berrington scoring 13 for the winners.
