Semi Finals Summary

Three very close matches this week with Whippet and Red Lion (Burscough) winning by a single point over Ormskirk Theatre Company and Abbey Saints respectively.  Another tightly-fought contest saw Parbold Exiles overcome Colliers Arms by just 2 points.

Highest scorer was Mike Unsworth for Colly Wobblers with 15 in their win over Aughton Institute. Two players scored 13 for losing teams, Dave Harding for Abbey Saints and Bill Gerrard for Colliers Arms.

Round 2/Plate Round 1 Summary

Abbey Saints were the only team to overcome the handicap, mainly due to winning 10-0 in Round 2. In the closest game of the night Helenians got to within 2 points of Parbold Exiles after Round 5, but could not get any closer. Rugby Hounds were within 1 point of Whippet after Round 6, but the second division team pulled away to win by 6. 

Highest scorer was Gordon Richards for Aughton Institute in their win over Ormskirk Tennis Club. Three players scored 18 for losing teams, David Hodgson for Rugby Hounds, Janet Crompton for Squigglers and Darren Martin for Unison. All four Abbey Saints players achieved double figure scores. In the seven games played 12 players answered 5 of their own questions correctly.

Round 1 Summary

The highlight of the first round was the victory by Ormskirk Theatre Company on their debut in the competition. They beat Abbey Saints without the need for the handicap.

Rugby Hounds had overcome the handicap by half time, then Red Lion (Burscough) fought back in the second half. With two questions remaining the scores were level, but the first division team just managed to win.

They now meet their local rivals Whippet who produced a good all round team performance to beat three man Unison.

Highest scorers with 22 points were Darren Martin (Unison) and Paul Prior (Ormskirk Tennis Club). Alan Gibbs (Wheatsheaf) scored 20 points which included answering 6 of his own questions. Bill Gerrard (Colliers Arms) and Eric Lupton (Rugby Hounds) also got 6 of their own questions.

Round 2 together with Round 1 of the Plate will be played on Monday April 8th.
