Ormskirk Quiz League

 

Welcome

The Ormskirk Quiz League celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2019-2020.

The 2025-2026 season will begin on Monday September 8 with all twelve teams playing each other in one division.

A Handicap League will also be based on these results.

Two divisions will be formed post Christmas.

The Don Liptrot Trophy, a handicap knockout, will run throughout the season.

A Pairs competition will be held as part of a Presentation Evening at the Stanley Arms on Monday March 30.

Most teams are on the lookout for new players and spectators are welcome at all matches.

Highlights Week 2

Turks Head Saints remain top on points difference after their comfortable win over Benchwarmers, Kevin Walton (14) and Barbara Flaherty (12) top scoring for the winners. The handicap result was a draw. Delph Tavern, for whom Paul McAteer scored an impressive 20 points and Sue Perks 13 started with a win over Greyhound, Ritchie Venner scoring 18 for Greyhound.    16 points from Alf Westwell and 13 from Bob Foster earned Helenians a win over Ormskirk Theatre Company for whom Gordon Richards scored 15. Despite 16 points from Bill Gerrard and 12 from Arthur Heyes, Turks Head Sinners lost to Newburgh Lions: Darren Martin (18), Jim Maloney (14) and John Purslow (12) led the scoring for the winners. The results for these three matches remained the same after handicaps were applied. Colly Wobblers, for whom Mike Unsworth scored 18, beat Scarecrows for whom Janet Crompton scored 15. 16 points from Eric Lupton earned Rugby Hounds a narrow victory over Hayfield Gang; Rob Jones and Jill Cochrane both scored 13 for Hayfield. The results of these latter two games were reversed when handicaps were applied. 

Highlights Week 1

Turks Head Saints, thanks to an impressive 22 points from Charles Johnson and 14 from Kevin Walton, had a convincing win over Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Gordon Richards scored 13. As a result the Saints assume top spot on points difference. 18 points from Andy McGowan and 17 from Roy Atherton earned Colly Wobblers a win over Hayfield Gang, for whom Rob Jones scored 14.   Despite 17 from Darren Martin, Newburgh Lions lost narrowly to Greyhound, for whom Ritchie Venner, Brian Farrimond and Lynne Ashcroft all scored 13. Turks Head Sinners, thanks to a major contribution of 21 points from Peter Duffy, beat Helenians, for whom Alf Westwell scored 14.The results of all these matches remained the same when handicaps were applied.   An excellent 21 points from Eric Lupton earned Rugby Hounds a win over Benchwarmers, for whom Rob Green scored an equally impressive 20 points. The result of this match was reversed on handicap.

MQL Presentation Night

Congratulations to Pat Gibson (Colly Wobblers) who won the MQL MIMIR Trophy for a record eighth time.

Ormskirk's winning President's Trophy and President's Shield teams were presented with their trophies.

Turks Head Saints were presented with the Rendon Cup which they won for the second successive season.

Rendon Cup

Congratulations to Turks Head Saints who have retained the MQL Rendon Cup by winning three matches in one night.

In the quarter final Wallaseyans (Wirral) were beaten 49-39, Charles Johnson scoring 18 points. In the semi final Legionnaires (Wirral) were beaten 52-37, Kevin Walton and Charles Johnson each scoring 17. In a closely contested final CTK Wanderers (Liverpool) were beaten 43-39, Charles Johnson scoring 16.

The trophy will be presented at the MQL Finals Night at Formby Cricket Club on May 14.
