Highlights Week 9

Division 1 :- Unison won by the narrowest of margins over Greyhound and remain unbeaten at the top of the table; Darren Martin (18) top scored for the winners while Mal Collier (16) did likewise for Greyhound.  Colly Wobblers stay second after their win over Rugby Hounds; Pat Gibson (20) and Mike Unsworth (19) led the scoring for the winners.  18 points from Jim Battersby and 16 from Bill Gerrard assured Turks Head Sinners’ win over Newburgh Lions, for whom Dave Sinclair scored 15.  Despite 17 points from Mike Flaherty, Helenians lost to Robin Hood.  16 points from Kevin Walton aided Turks Head Saints’ victory over Ormskirk Tennis Club, for whom Phil McConnell’s recent good form continued with an individual score of 16 points. 

Division 2 :- 15 points from Andrew Sackville and 12 from Matt Cochrane helped Gang of Four to a win over Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Alan Thompson scored 14. Whippet stay top, with a narrow win over Ormskirk Farmers; Debbie Davidson scored 15 for the winners and Kevin Braithwaite 13 for the Farmers. Despite 12 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost by a single point to Aughton Institute. Squigglers remain in second after their win over Bispham Farmers Arms; Magnus Brass and Barry Marshall both scored 13 for the winners.

European Championships

Pat Gibson (Colly Wobblers) had considerable success at the European Championships held recently in Sofia, Bulgaria. Pat and his partner Kevin Ashman won the Pairs Championship for the eighth time, Pat’s ninth overall. They were both in the England team that won the Nations Cup for the eleventh time. Pat also won a special Business quiz. Unfortunately Pat missed out on retaining the Individual Championship by one point to Crosby educated Ian Bayley.

Merseyside Challenge Cup

All four Ormskirk teams won their matches this week by comfortable margins.

In Group 1 Turks Head Sinners beat Wallaseyans (Wirral) 49-32 with 18 from Bill Gerrard and 15 from Francis Williams.

In Group 2 Unison beat Aardvarks (Wirral) 57-25 with 20 from Darren Martin, 17 from Charles Johnson and 15 from David Kenrick.

In Group 3 Greyhound beat Bishop Eton (Liverpool) 55-41 with 18 from John Wilson including answering all 8 of his own questions and 17 from Andy Francis.

In Group 4 Colly Wobblers beat Oxton Cons (Wirral) 59-35 with 19 from Mike Unsworth and 15 from Pat Gibson.

Highlights Week 8

Division 1 :- Unison maintained their 100% record with a comfortable win over Turks Head Saints; Darren Martin (21 and a ‘full house’) and Charles Johnson (15) led the scoring for Unison while Kevin Walton replied with 15 for the Saints.  Colly Wobblers, thanks to 22 from Pat Gibson, stay second after their win over Ormskirk Tennis Club, for whom Phil McConnell scored 20.  19 points from David Hodgson helped Rugby Hounds overcome Helenians, who remain winless at the foot of the table.   21 points from Jim Maloney proved the difference in Newburgh Lions’ win over Robin Hood. Despite 19 points from Bill Gerrard, Turks Head Sinners lost to Greyhound, all of whose players registered double figure score with John Wilson leading with 20.

Division 2 :- Whippet stay top and undefeated after beating Gang of Four; Gordon Richards (22 and a ‘full house’) and Peter Duffy (13) top scored for Whippet while Matt Cochrane (13) and Rob Jones (12) did likewise for Gang of Four.  Squigglers, for whom Janet Crompton scored 22 points, remain second in the table after a thumping win over Legion Lions, Steve Garrett adding 13 to the Legion’s score. 13 points from Jim Dawber helped Bispham Farmers Arms earn a draw with Aughton Institutue. Ormskirk Theatre Company, for whom Alan Thompson scored 15, overcame a three man Benchwarmers.
