Merseyside Challenge Cup

An excellent start with victories for all four Ormskirk teams. Holders Colly Wobblers beat Exiles (Liverpool) 55-39, Pat Gibson and Mike Unsworth both scoring 17 points and just missing a full house. Greyhound beat another Liverpool team Judges, 54-46 thanks to 22 points from John Wilson.

In a three-a-side contest Unison won in Southport against E Street Band 55-36. Darren Martin also just missed a full house in his score of 24 backed up by Charles Johnson with 18. Abbey Sinners beat a third Liverpool team Bishop Eton on the last question by 47-45. Bill Gerrard scored 19, another player answering 7 of his own questions, supported by 16 from Francis Williams.

Highlights Week 5

Division 1 :-  Greyhound maintained their unbeaten record and stay top, after their win over Robin Hood; Ritchie Venner scoring 16 for the winners.  Unison, thanks to 20 points from Darren Martin and 17 from Charles Johnson, had a comfortable win over Abbey Saints. 23 points from Pat Gibson helped Colly Wobblers overcome Newburgh Lions and as a result they move into third place. Paul Prior’s 20 points was the difference in Ormskirk Tennis Club’s victory over Helenians. Whippet  had their first win of the season by beating  Squigglers.

Division 2 :- Rugby Hounds maintained their 100% record and remain top after their win over Aughton Institute; David Hodgson (23) and Eric Lupton (13) led the scoring for the winners. Abbey Sinners also have a 100% record but have played one game less and so remain in second place after beating Ormskirk Theatre Company; Bill Gerrard (17) and Francis Williams (12) topped the scoring for the winners while Alan Thompson replied with 15 for the Theatre Company. Despite 13 points from Rob Green, Benchwarmers lost to Ormskirk Farmers for whom Phil Roberts contributed 12 points. 13 points from Matt Cochrane and 12 from Rob Jones earned Gang of Four a win over Bispham Farmers for whom Jim Dawber scored 12.

Merseyside Challenge Cup

The first matches in the group stage of this season’s competition take place on Wednesday. 

Holders Colly Wobblers entertain Exiles (Liverpool) in Group A. Unison who were runners up last season travel to E Street Band (Southport & Formby) in Group C which also sees Abbey Sinners entertain Bishop Eton (Liverpool). Greyhound begin in Group B at home to Judges (Liverpool).

President’s Shield

In the second evening of matches Ormskirk unfortunately lost two very close matches, 35-38 to Warrington and 40-42 to Southport & Formby. Rob Green (Benchwarmers) made his debut in the second match in which Bill Gerrard scored 16 points.

Highlights Week 4

Division 1 :- 15 points from Mal Collier and double figure scores from all their players, assured Greyhound’s victory over Abbey Saints, for whom Barbara Flaherty scored 15; as a result Greyhound remain in top place. Unison remain second after their win over Ormskirk Tennis Club; Darren Martin (20 plus a full house) and Charles Johnson (15) led the scoring for Unison while Paul Prior replied with 19 points for the Tennis Club. Newburgh Lions, thanks to 20 points from Jim Maloney won the day over Squigglers; Barry Marshall scoring 17 for the losing team. 17 points from Sue Perks and 16 from Mike Preston earned Robin Hood a win over Whippet. Colly Wobblers had the narrowest of wins in a very tight game over Helenians; Mike Unsworth scored 16 for the winners and Dave Boyd 15 for Helenians. 

Division 2 :- Rugby Hounds remain top after a comfortable win over Benchwarmers; Colin MacDonald (17), Eric Lupton (15) and David Hodgson (18) scored well for the winners while Rob Green added 20 points to Benchwarmers score. 17 points from Bill Gerrard earned Abbey Sinners a win over Bispham Farmers Arms for whom Jim Dawber scored 15 and Donal Monaghan 12. Ormskirk Theatre Company, thanks to 13 from Alan Thompson had a narrow win over Ormskirk Farmers.
